An ex-Fresno police officer has been arrested in connection with an auto-theft case, according to Fresno County Jail records. Jail records show Alfred “Al” Campos, 39, was arrested by Fresno police and released on bond late Tuesday night. The jail log lists the charge as possession of a stolen vehicle. The Fresno Police Department’s Career Criminal Auto Theft Team began investigating Campos last year after he took a 2011 Chevrolet pickup to Michael’s Cadillac on North Blackstone Avenue for service, according to Fresno County Superior Court records. After a mechanic discovered that the pickup’s vehicle identification number didn’t match automotive records, he contacted police. Detectives determined the VIN had been tampered or altered. A detective also found another VIN on the pickup that was for a 2008 Chevrolet pickup reported stolen from a dealership in Fairfax, Va., on Oct. 23, 2013, the court documents stated. The stolen truck “then somehow was registered in California under Suspect Campos’ name as a 2011 Chevy pickup truck, “ Fresno police detective Cary Phelps wrote in an affidavit in support of a search warrant. Detectives used the warrant last year to search Campos’ home on Clinton Avenue and his business, A&A Auto Service, on North Blackstone near Ashlan Avenue.

Lt. Joe Gomez said Campos was terminated from the Fresno Police Department on Jan. 12, 2014
